Yunnan Xishuangbanna IFM Project China

Improving the forest coverage rate and protecting the native ecosystems

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project prevents commercial logging and improves forest management to preserve native ecosystems

Known for its Dai culture, distinctive temples and tropical rainforests, Xishuangbanna is an autonomous prefecture in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, bordering Myanmar and Laos. The Yunnan Xishuangbanna forestry industry has traditionally produced timber and wood products especially furniture and wooden panels. Prior to the implementation of the Yunnan Xishuangbanna Improved Forestry Management Project, the forest within the project area was designed and planted as commercial forest and logged annually according to the timber production plan.

Since the project’s implementation in 2012, the commercial harvest of logging is no longer allowed with the forest legal right belonging to the local collective or individual farmers.

The project is expected to generate 2,339,759 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) over its 19-year crediting period, with an average annual emissions reduction of 116,987 tCO2e.
