The Yagual carbon sequestration project for the restoration, conservation and sustainable production in the Guerrero, Sumapaz and Rabanal paramo systems (Project Yagual) is a grouped project expected to increase forest cover of over 1,500 hectares of non-forest land, in the Colombian high Andes, through sustainable agroforestry systems and reforestation activities for conservation purposes.
Historically these areas have been untouched or used for agricultural practices mainly for potato. The planned interventions aim to significantly increase the economic and environmental benefits of the project landowners, while ensuring the sustainability of their farming practice. Existing conditions have lead, in most of the cases, to progressive degradation of land, destroying the soil through unsustainable and financially risky traditional potato production with very little space for improvement. As such, this project has been designed to take into account the need to overcome a range of barriers faced by landowners in the Colombian high Andes and to implement conservation or sustainable agroforestry activities in a financially viable way.

Beyond the global environmental objectives (carbon sequestration), the project focuses on achieving local sustainable development and environmental objectives. The incentive related to the carbon aspect of the project will allow a multitude of land owners to improve their land management system, generate new revenues in a sustainable way and ensure that new forest cover will remain in place for the long term.
This project is verified by the Verified Carbon Standard.
