Time Tested Forestation in Uganda

A combined reforestation and sustainable development project in Uganda

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Supporting a collective of farmers who are restoring and planting pine, grevillea and teak on thousands of individual farms, across Aswa, Uganda.

The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST) is a combined reforestation and sustainable development project in Uganda, carried out by farmers. By planting trees on their lands farmers are able to retain ownership of the trees and their products. They receive extensive training to combat the devastating effects of deforestation, poverty and drought so as to combine sustainable development with carbon sequestration. The program aims to increase the count and hectares of indigenous trees, number of trees planted, number in Endangered/Vulnerable/Threatened Species planted, number of hectares of hillside and riparian planting, and positive environmental impact.

The program’s community objectives include; increasing the number of participating farmers within project and program, the total payments to community, the number of live trees planted (including various high value trees), the number of people employed by TIST, additional economic benefits per farmer, and increase in training on ICT, Climate Change, HIV/AIDs, Biodiversity, Natural Resource Management and other sustainable development practices.

More about the project

Carbon credit sales generate incomes and provide project funding to address agricultural, HIV/AIDS, nutritional and fuel challenges. The maturing trees and Conservation Farming will provide additional sustainable benefits that far exceed the carbon payments.

Verification

This project is verified by the Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard.
