The Soubré Hydro Power Plant, one of the biggest hydropower plants of its kind in the Ivory Coast, located upstream of the natural falls of the Sassandra River. Currently, electricity in Côte d’Ivoire is mainly generated from fossil fuels (natural gas and fuel oil) which leads to considerable greenhouse gas emissions.
Support for renewable energy is a priority in the Côte d’Ivoire and the project allows the country to increase its electric power by 10%, substituting fossil-fuel intensive grid-electricity and cutting down GHG emissions by an estimated annual reduction of 607,720 tCO2e.
Maintaining biodiversity and inclusive social and economic development is also a priority with a dedicated area of over 200 hectares has been allocated for the protection and the preservation of native fauna and flora species as well as the implementation of career development for the fishing industry in Soubré with training provided for aspiring fishermen.

The project has invested an estimated 15% of the total investment in state-of-the-art socio- environmental mitigation measures.

The project is committed to social well-being and improving regional facilities through the implementation of a new health center, better housing and new schools.
EMPLOYMENT
The project will help increase employment opportunities for local people, providing over 1,500 direct jobs
DEVELOPMENT
New revenue streams for local populations are being created through fishing in the project area and the development of agriculture and tourism.
