Savannah Regeneration and Recovery Agroforestry Project

Recovering natural savannah and biodiversity in Mato Grosso do Sul Brazil

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project aims to recover what is left of natural savanna within the project zone, protecting soil and recovering local biodiversity, in Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil.

This agroforestry project aims to promote the investment in commercial plantations in the Municipality of Costa Rica which is in the north-eastern part of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). The aim is to effectively change the use of this land area from extensive cattle ranching (which is of low productivity and which requires prescribed burns to encourage the regrowth of degraded grassland) to sustainable forest production systems.

Introducing good forestry practices will increase the forest cover within the Project region and promote the restoration of the existing natural forest areas (the “Legal Reserve,” which requires rural properties to maintain 20% of the land as natural vegetation) and as such generating a landscape of biological and productive corridors that produce financial, social and environmental services for the region.

More about the project

The objective in the first instance was to establish forest plantations with high carbon capture species. Therefore, the species of genus Eucalyptus was chose because of its high adaptability to the soil and climate condition that characterised the region of the Project and because of its very rapid growth and large potential as carbon sinks. This species was Eucalyptus uro-grandis

Verification

This project is verified by the Verified Carbon Standard.
