Reforestation and Agroforestry of Degraded Lands

Restoring and rehabilitating over 4,000 hectares of forest in NIcaragua

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Rehabilitating natural lands that have suffered high levels of degradation in the Siuna and Bonanza areas in Nicaragua.

The forestry initiative was born in 2008 and from 2015 the project vision changed its focus to a more sustainable agroforestry project that combines teak and cacao crops. The project aims to restore and rehabilitate over 4000 hectares of forest, by 2030, near Siuna in Nicaragua. Since 2016, almost 700 hectares of pure teak and cacao agroforestry have been delivered.

The project is located just over 300 km from the capital of the country, Managua. The first plantations that were delivered ahead of this project, will be grouped into the project area as well. The planted area has so far expanded from between 100-200 hectares per year. When the teak is harvested, it is replanted on a continuous rotation cycle.
