A total of 183,455 ha will be protected through this project, which has been designated as a forest concession area for the management and maintenance of its ecosystem. Baseline logging, together with logging road building, maintenance, skidding trails and other infrastructure will cease within the project boundary, resulting in the elimination of emissions caused by logging activities.
This important section of the Peruvian Amazonian forest will be protected from disturbance, reducing emissions from logging operations to support the accumulation of carbon content over time and the recovery of biodiversity affected by previous logging.
Emissions from deforestation, whether planned or unplanned and the change in land use is the largest contributing factor of Peru’s contributions to global warming. Estimated deforestation and land use changes in Peru have contributed 53 million tonnes of carbon emissions to the global atmosphere with over 118,000 hectares of carbon-absorbing trees in the Peruvian Amazon cut down.
The project is a significant step forward to restricting planned logging and deforestation within a rich and delicate ecosystem.

The project will work with surrounding communities to establish an active conservation programme that benefits local peoples, the forest’s biodiversity and the health of this ecosystem. Jobs created will include forest rangers, eco-guides, research and monitoring assistants and other support staff. Forest rangers will regularly patrol the project area to detect and deter illegal logging, hunting and encroachment. The project plans to develop the area as a prime destination for ecotourism and scientific research, establishing a lodge and research station within the first five years. In addition, the project aims to establish and support sustainable non-timber forest resources and fruit growing enterprises with the communities.
