Generation Forest Group Project

Regeneration of tropical plantations in Panama

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A project which aims to deliver 150 full time job opportunities, managing important tropical hardwood plantations with ecological benefits, in Agua Fria, Panama.

This project aims to reforest 1,100 hectares of degraded land which has mainly been used for cattle ranching and pasture and has been designed to continually increase the project zone, project area, and the number of project instances within the expansion area during its lifetime. The project promotes sustainable forest management and innovative silvicultural practices, using mainly native hardwood species for its reforestation sites as well as enrichment planting and assisted natural regeneration where appropriate.

Throughout its lifetime, the project will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by acting as a sink, sequestering more than 2,700,000 tCO2e. In addition, this project is expected to provide more than 150 full-time employment opportunities, as well as promote the recuperation of natural biodiversity habitats in this region.

More about the project

With its unique approach, this project aims to achieve permanent forest landscape restoration. It’s approach is based on the Generation Forest Concept, which combines the economic use of high commercial value tropical hardwood plantations with the ecological benefits that are similar to those of natural tropical forests, including carbon sequestration, the creation and preservation of habitats for biodiversity, and the restoration and protection of hydrological and soil resources.

Verification

This project is verified by the Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard.
