This celebrity-owned brand is making waves with their incredible range of sustainable hair care products…
Be Free by Danielle Fishel is a Los Angeles based hair care company that has recently joined our One Tribe community. They are leading the way as a hair care company that not only cares about profit but provides their customers with incredible products free of nasties. They offer a range of products, including shampoo and conditioner, hairspray, heat protectant, leave-in conditioner, hair masks, thickening creams, scalp treatments, and more.
The business was founded by Danielle Fishel, who long craved a go-to hair care business that produced great products without harsh chemicals. The Be Free name has many meanings for customers, some of which include ‘be happy,’ ‘be free from toxins,’ ‘be free from parabens,’ ‘be you’ and ‘be free from stress.’
Not only is the company ensuring they produce mostly natural and organic products that help customers achieve their hair goals, but they are also committed to monitoring their environmental impact and becoming as sustainable as possible. Ready to find out more about this hair care hero and why their business is the perfect example of a business that not only cares about its customer’s hair but cares for the planet too?
The incredible hair care company that is Be Free by Danielle Fishel began when the actress found out she was pregnant. She became increasingly conscious of what she was putting into her body and what products she used on her skin and hair. After some research, she discovered a lot of the products she was using were not very healthy but often packed with chemicals.
When she took the plunge and purchased 100% organic and natural products, Danielle was not ecstatic with the results. While the products were natural, they still lacked luster. She couldn’t meet her hair goals quite as much and sometimes found they didn’t even clean her hair. Danielle was puzzled by this and unsure as to what to do. She questioned if there was a way to have the benefits of natural products and achieve what she was getting from products with harsh chemicals.
This is what led to Be Free! Danielle wanted to free herself and people across the globe from the dilemma of sacrificing one for the other. As a result, she created a line of hair care products that have better ingredients and ensure better results.
In addition, everything Danielle wants from a product is wrapped up in one small package – Made locally in the USA, cruelty-free, eco-friendly, accessible, inclusive, vegan, and empowering. The team at Be Free has done all the research so that customers don’t have to; they can simply buy and enjoy. What’s more, they haven’t stopped there; as a hair care company, they are constantly creating new products and have even set their eyes on skincare products.
A lot of products are advertised as ‘free of, x, y, z,’ so you’re probably wondering what ingredients Be Free products do not contain. In addition, there is a lot of greenwashing these days since being a sustainable brand is practically a unique selling point. Be Free is transparent about what they put into their ingredients and what they do not include.
Be Free don’t use any parabens in their products. Parabens generally function as preservatives in cosmetic products. Unfortunately, research has found them to be endocrine disruptors in that they can mess with regular estrogen production. Too much estrogen in the body can result in tumours growing or breast cell division.
This is precisely why parabens have been linked to reproductive problems and breast cancer. Since Be Free products do not contain parabens, they may occasionally separate but don’t fret; all you have to do is give them a shake to mix everything together again.
When it comes to sulfates, they are detergents that give that super-sudsy lather. However, in the process, they overclean the hair and scalp and, as a result, strip your hair’s natural oils. As well as that, they can strip colour, irritate the scalp and skin and cause breakage. You may be thinking that’s great but aren’t shampoos supposed to lather?
Don’t worry, Be Free’s shampoo still lathers, and their customers have said it is one of the best natural shampoos on the market that still lathers. If you want to get a good lather with your Be Free shampoo, be sure to make your hair extra wet and add some extra water mid later to increase the suds.
Sodium chloride is not used in any Be Free products. While to most, it is just table salt, it can cause an itchy, dry scalp and, in some cases, hair loss. Like sulfates, it strips the hair’s natural oils. In addition, sodium chloride can burn and sting the eyes and affect the condition and colour of the hair.
Another ingredient Danielle does not include in her products is phthalates, an ingredient regularly used in plastic products such as cosmetics and toys. They are essentially plasticisers in that they make products more filmy and flexible. Phthalates can also be used as solvents to stabilise and preserve things like fragrances in hair care products.
However, they can impact normal reproductive hormones and functioning. This can cause reduced sex hormone production, male infertility, and even birth defects. Some research has found they increase breast tumour cells too.
Be Free products do not contain any gluten, and the reason for this is many people have gluten sensitivities. Unlike the other chemicals, it isn’t inheritably bad; however, Be Free wanted to ensure their product was accessible to these individuals and that they didn’t have to worry about anything.
Danielle’s products are also phosphate-free because they strip the scalp and hair of its natural oils and cause irritation and the hair to become dry and brittle. What’s more, if you already have scalp issues, using products that contain phosphates will likely only irritate it further.
An ingredient left out of Be Free products that consumers may be surprised about is fragrance. This doesn’t mean Be Free products do not smell good; they just do not contain artificial fragrances. This is because these fragrances generally consist of several hidden chemicals. They are explicitly used to mask the smell of the chemicals in the product.
The hidden chemicals in synthetic fragrances cause asthma, cancer and interfere with the reproductive system. They are also known to cause allergies, and if you have a sensitive scalp or skin, the fragrance will only cause further irritation. The good smell in Be Free products comes directly from the natural ingredients they use in their products. They do not add any additional chemicals to make their products smell good.
Danielle hopes to get the message across that “we don’t have to sacrifice health in exchange for efficacy. So many of the clean products I tried before starting Be Free by Danielle Fishel were totally natural but they left a lot to be desired in terms of the user experience. I missed shampoo lather, I missed my hair feeling lightweight and bouncy. When I started this company, I refused to settle until I had everything I wanted and I’m really proud of that.”
Beyond ensuring their products are no harm to animals and people, Be Free has also partnered with us at One Tribe. They will be working with us to protect rainforests. This means when customers buy from them, a portion of this goes to protecting trees.
To date, they have protected 4,000 trees, 2,460.57 tonnes of carbon have been stored, 24.38 acres have been saved, and a total of 48,133.8 car emissions have been removed from the atmosphere as a result.
However, they are also doing many other things which make them an outstanding sustainable company.
Some of these include their honesty and transparency about the exact ingredients which go into their products.
These ingredients include aloe vera juice, fruit extracts, lavender oil, flower extract, nettle, white tea extract, peppermint oil, and more. It goes without say that the ingredients used in Be Free products are very kind to the Earth.
All Be Free products are made locally in the USA, where workers earn fair wages and are not overworked.
In addition, they continue to work at expanding their product line to offer people more eco-friendly, gentle solutions to haircare and skincare. Those interested in Be Free products should keep their eyes peeled as there are a number of other products in the works right now. All of which is kind to the planet and people. Danielle explains: “We just launched a foaming face wash called Be Fresh and I am absolutely obsessed with it. I worked very hard on it because I like an all-in-one cleanser that dissolves makeup and doesn’t leave my skin dry. Accomplishing that while also not using harsh or iffy chemicals is harder than you’d think.”
When asked about why Danielle decided to create an environmentally-conscious company, she said:
Be Free by Danielle Fishel is one of the top beauty brands that not only cares about profit, but also its people, the local community, animals, and the planet. We are so excited to have them join our One Tribe community and see how their impact on the planet grows now that we are working together.
It is so crucial that other hair care companies join movements like ours to protect the Amazon rainforest. After all, the rainforest is the lungs of our planet, and we must protect it and end deforestation.
